Vancouver Citation Style for Canadian Nursing and Medical Students

5 min read · For Canadian students

Vancouver style rules used across Canadian nursing, medicine, and allied health.

Vancouver numbers references sequentially in superscript or brackets and is the default in Canadian medical and most nursing programs.

Reference list is in citation order, not alphabetical. Reordering is mechanical with a citation manager and a nightmare without.

Author names: last name first, initials with no periods. List up to six authors; use 'et al.' beyond that.

Journal titles abbreviate per the NLM Catalog. Spelling out where Vancouver expects abbreviation costs marks.

PMID and PMCID are increasingly required in programs publishing through PubMed Central.

Clinical guidelines from CADTH, Health Canada, and provincial health authorities have specific citation patterns - save the template once.

Personal communications are cited in text but not in the reference list.
